Banner buying guide: vinyl, mesh, blockout and how big to go
Choose the right banner material, size, finishing and stand for indoor, outdoor and windy locations.
Pick the material for where it hangs
- Outdoor vinyl: the all-round choice for most outdoor banners.
- 15 oz premium blockout vinyl: stops light showing through; use for double-sided banners and in front of windows or lights.
- Mesh: lets wind pass through; use on fences, scaffolding and long outdoor runs.
- 10 mil premium indoor vinyl: smooth and flat for lobbies, stages and trade show walls.
- Fabric (9 oz polyester): no glare and folds for travel.
Size for reading distance
A banner read from a passing car needs very few words in very large letters. A common rule of thumb is about one inch of letter height for every 10 feet of viewing distance for basic legibility, and more for impact. Measure where it will hang before you design.
Finishing
Hemmed edges and grommets are the normal finish for hanging with rope, zip ties or bungees. Pole pockets suit banners that slide onto a pole. Tell us how it will be mounted.
Or a stand
Indoors, a retractable banner stand (33 or 47 inches wide) sets up in a minute and travels in a bag. A telescopic backdrop stand makes a larger wall behind a table or stage.
